THE SILK ROAD DURING THE HAN DYNASTY

THE SILK ROAD DISCUSSION

ËThe silk road grew during the HAN DYNASTY between 202 BCE and
220 CE.
ËThis growth led to an increase in the silk trade.
ËCaravans carried silk to outside edges of the region.
ËMany caravans were attacked by Central Asian tribes, called BABARIANS, hoping for riches.
ËBecause these caravans were important to trade and the economy of China, the Han Dynasty extended its military further into Central Asia to protect the Caravans.

ËA Chinese traveler made contact with the nomad barbarians      who were attacking the caravans, and told them if they would let them expand the silk trade and road, they would include them in the trading economy.
 ËTHE SILK ROAD WAS BORN!!

ËThe Silk Road is at least 11,000 km. long.
ËCanada is about 5500 km. long.
ËThe Silk Road connected the Yellow River Valley to the Mediterranean Sea which improved trade relations.
ËMost trade relations between China and India were for precious stones and metal like jade, gold, silver, silk.
ËWhen travelling the silk road, merchants were exposed to different culture and religion.
 ËThe Chinese traded:
-Silk
-Perfume
-Slaves
-Medicine
ËIn 760CE, under the new Tang Dynasty, the Silk Road trading declined.
