LESSON 1.0 - CIVILIZATIONS

EXPLORING CIVILIZATIONS

  • Civilizations are quite complex, and involve large numbers of people.
  • In the past, human societies were relatively simple, and had few people.
  • Both societies and civilizations share characteristics such as commerce, language, religion, and art.
DOMESTICATION
  • 12,000 years ago, humans began to domesticate plants and animals.
  • This domestication allowed humans to stay in the same place year after year.
  • Extra food allowed for population growth.
  • Extra food also allowed some people to stop farming and instead they made tools, clothing, or they provided security.

  • As towns grew, they needed more protection, so people worked together to build walls.

http://deskarati.com/2011/08/27/neolithic-villages/
  • About 7000 years ago, some of these towns became so large and complex that they became cities.
  • These cities joined together to share territory, protect each other, and exchange goods.
  • This was the first example of civilizations.

FEATURES OF CIVILIZATION

There are 8 FEATURES OF CIVILIZATION:

  3. 1.) central goverment beacuse if a civilization without laws than civilizations would crumble and/or the civilization would beacome more vunerable to attack from other civilizations.
2.) organized commerce (oc) if we dident have a oc we would be stuck with only the things that come from your civilization like if your civilization did not have animals then you would have to trade for them or else your civilization would die.
3.) public works (pw) with out pw civilizations would note pleasent looking and there would be no roads to aid in tradeing

  6. Socials 8: Cassidy and Katy,

We think that "Central Government" is a big part of civilization because, without government everything would be very unorganized. With a democracy the people of the civilization can choose how things should go by voting. When you vote, it is more fair because you can see other people's opinions. We think this is the best way for society to function.

Another part of civilization is "Social Structure". Social Structure is like everyone doing a job to make the community better.

  9. lloyd- im chosing public works, social strucre, and arts/cultre. I chose these ones because they are all tell us about stuff and teaches us stuff/ getts us new stuff. public works- because we pay taxs to it and they biuld new stuff. social strucre- so we can learn from past mistakes. arts/cultre- so we can learn stuff like about animal. public works- we pay tax's to get new roads and parks for are beniftes to use. socail strucre- so we can look at old mistakes and not do the same. arts/cultre- so we can expess are selfs and learn thing from the art.

    Pulbic works
    Central Goverment
    Organized Commerce
i chose these because they seem to be the main part of civilization.
Public works: You pay taxes and some of those taxes fund to new things to help your community.
Central Goverment: We need laws to keep everyone safe, and in order. and not wrecking everything. LOL ;D
Organized Commerce: if you didnt have organized commerce in the winter you couldnt have some berries from tropical places. it keeps everything organized and running safely.

Organized Religion- Everyone has some sort of beliefs, and some may choose to have none. Religion helps structure society in some ways.
Social Structure- People need to come together and talk, communication is necessary.
Technological Innovation- It is important for technology to progress because we need to make new scientific discoveries, as more diseases are uncovered.

I think Public Works is important because you could get a new road, it's always nice to have something new. You could get a new park. I also think Central Government is important because there are laws you have to follow. With laws, people are safer. Organized Commerce is important. Without money, you couldn't buy or sell things.

knowledge transfer is important to civilizations because we can learn about other contries and people through the internet now. Organized commerce is important because we need taxes to pay for our infrastructure and our education. It also pays for more buildings to go up in small comunities. Central goverment is also very important to comunities because with out it people would just do whatever they want and things would be complete disorganization.

  14. i think Public works is important because Public works is like the beach or the park and its important because what if i had a new dog or somthing and i wanted to train it or teach it how to walk, i could just easily take my dog to a nice place like the beach or the park. the other important thing is knowledge and transformation, it means to me like communicating with one other like say i hada friend in Vancouver, and i lived in Ashcroft will i cant just go and drive everyday over there to see her. so i would just call on the phone, or just like talk to her on facebook. and i could also send her letters in the mail. The last important thing it think is Central Government, i think this means like Laws and rules but i mean say we didnt have any rules.. then people would be breaking them and they could possibly running around like CRAZY stuff like breaking into persons homes and kiling people doing criminal stuff so, its a GOOD thing we have laws

  15. orginized religion it is good because you go to church and not be b uged cous your jewish or belive in god or athiest. central goverment is a good topick cous if there was no goverment the worlds aconimy would drop there would be no order. publick works without publick works there would be no playgronds or roads or scools likeimagin if you had pay to go to elemantry school it would suck. by tristen harder

  16. i think central goverment very important because everyone needs to pay there taxs and follow the laws, so if we have a good educationwe do more better in life.

technolgical innovationis a good way to commuicat better because you can talk to people near and far away, and you can do more thing with technolgy.

And the last one is social structure is people have to have there own jobs to suport them, but if we didn't have people to have in are community to do thing and we would'nt make a civilization work so we can make a better community!! :D

  17. In my opinion the 3 most important features of a society are:

Arts and Culture- I think this is important because without it, people wouldn't be able to celebrate paintings, music, art, or great ideas that they believe in. If this didn't exist, people wouldn't be able to celebrate some or all of the art and culture that make them who they are.

Organized Religion- I think this is important because having the freedom to have organized religion because without it, it would be impossible to practice what religion you wanted and things like the holocaust could happen again.

Knowledge Transfer- I think this is important because without it, nobody or very few would get a proper education. Without a proper education, it would be next to impossible to get a job. It is also very important because with a proper education we can learn about other's inventions, past mistakes, and findings. If we didn't know about other's past mistakes, inventions, and findings, we could make the same mistakes again and wouldn't be able to advance from other's past findings and inventions.

I would like to say that this is what I find important, but I find this important as of growing up in Canada. What I am trying to say is Organized Religion in Canada compared to other parts of the world is very different. In Canada, you are free to celebrate whatever religion you want, but that isn't how it is in all parts of the world. In other parts of the world, what religions you can celebrate is much stricter, so you can't celebrate certian religions. This is the same for all the features of a civilization.

  18. I think Arts and Culture, knowledge transfer and socail structure are the most important because arts and colture would be a way to express yourself witch i think everyone needs to do, knowledge transfer because people wouldnt b able to do anything or really survive life if they didnt have an education
