LESSON 1.1 - RELIGION AND CIVILIZATION

RELIGION
  • Religious beliefs are one way a civilization can define or describe itself.
  • Religion also affects people's values and actions.
WHY RELIGION?
  • Humans have always asked questions about why we are on the earth.
  • Questions like: Why do bad things happen?  and What happens to me after I die?
  • Human beings like to have answers to their questions.
  • Scientific questions are based on a hypothesis and then experiments to discover if the original question was correct.
  • With religious questions, people have to accept answers that are based on faith.
DIFFERENT RELIGIONS, DIFFERENT ANSWERS
  • There are many religions in the world and each has different answers to the "big questions."
  • The answers to the "big questions" have no scientifically provable answers so no one religion has the "right" answers.
  • Different religions around the world have developed over thousands of years.
  • In the past it was common for everyone in the same country to follow the same religion.
  • People began asking questions like "What if people disagreed?" and "What if someone came up with new answers to the big questions?"
  • Today, religion is often a catalyst for disagreements and sometimes war.
  • In some places in the world people of different religious beliefs live side by side, but cannot get along, and sometimes they can.

  3. with all the religions people lie about one anothers beliefs and this will start a fight between them and that is usually how wars begin.
say that buddhisam and Islam came toghether they would fight over if there is a god or not because buddhisam belives there is no god and they will back there thoughts up with fighting. so bacilly saying that if we all come toghether there will be a war.by lloyd and hunter

  4. Religion affects civilization because...
Everyone has a different religion and that affects their beliefs and ways of celebration. Some days you take time away from your regular routine to practice that religion. You also may eat a diffrent food. You may have to dress diffrent. Some religions have certian rules that are ment to be followed.

  6. judaism caused a big deal with hitler many many years ago but it wasnt the jews fault. people say that jewish people are people are that make money there first proritey.i would say judaism isnt a big deal they are people and so are we people make a big deal over and say i need some one that is good with money i am going to find a jew so i would say that cuased a big deal

    1. You seem to be very accepting of many races and religions. Sometimes the tone of the word Jew is not taken the proper way, so the correct way of re-writing your sentence would look like this: "I will find someone of the Jewish faith....."

  8. I think it can efect it because some religons could be in the same building and then they say something about each others culture. Really big figth could break out and the fight will build and build until no more show up. i would think it would be better if they just kept there coments to them self instead of spred them around there religon and then the religon that they are talking about finds out and they get really mad at that culture and start a war or like bomb where they are stayig/live. Whwn people dont get along they have a lot of fights and they get really out of controll. They should get the cultures together and have a talk with them about respect. it could efect how people live and they would think different about each other and not the way the used to. It's like trust.

  9. i think it could affect the civilization because there religons have there own beliefes and that could affect the civilization because they could start a fight ect

  10. Religion can be a huge part in civilization. It can even control a civilization. If more than one religion is involved in a civilization, that can cause problems. Battles can break out, wars can be fought, descrimination can be used. All because two or more religions do not see eye to eye. This can even happen when a religion's beliefs are split up (ei. Catholic Christianity and Angligan Christianity).
Sometimes a civiization sharing religions is no problem at all.

Sometimes, a religion's custom can be shared with the civilization itself (ie. Christamas is celebrated by many people of many religions these days).

When people practice religion in a civilization, that is not where the religion originated, this religion may become altered (ie. Islam religion in Canada is different than in Saudi Arabia.)

  11. well i think there are more people who belive in there relgions then people who dont because they get it from there family and when they marrie somone they want them to belive in the same relgoin not marrie someone who does not belive but if they want to belive there is no problem with that.

  12. Brie and Cass:
Religion can affect civilization because it divides people, a bunch of people can be in one room and completely hate each other. If we could all just accept that people think differently Than the world would be a better place.

    1. I think the world can be a better place too. We need to lead the steps to paying it forward:)

  13. Religion affects a civilization's laws and rights. Some people's beliefs affect how laws affect them, because according to their religion, some laws against them may seem unfair or unjust. Their rights in their religion may be different in the civilization they live in.

  14. A lot of religions are creating bigger and bigger groupd and one day maybe we are only gunna have a small group that in non religious most people celebrate holidays, like easter and christmas but some of those people are'nt even christian they know of it as a world wide holdiday so if there were no religions there would be no holdidays, we would have nothing to look forward to and keep us going through the year!

  17. I think religion can affect civilizations by peoples beliefs. If some people believe in one thing and another believes in something else, that could cause disagreements, arguments, wars, etc. between the two groups. Not everyone has the same beliefs or religion.

    1. We do see a lot of wars that seem to be started because of peoples different beliefs....great observation.

Chistianity I dont think it would affect our civiliation because well I think people hind their religion or just tell pacfic people, but I think people dont care what their religion is or what they believe in because we all believe in something diffrent than others in our own way , and with diffrent people that believe in the same thing as them.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Religions affect civilization because people always fight about religions and try to get others to join there religion and so on

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think people should just get along and not be like hating on each other for there religion because it starts wars etc.. its not a good thing. people die because they are christian or hindu or anything like that. i think people should just lay off. then maybe there will be less wars
